No Power to the Controller Box

No Power to the Controller Box

If your controller box is not receiving any power, it could be caused by several issues. This guide will help you identify the cause and provide actionable steps to resolve the problem.

Here are some common causes and their solutions:

1. Verify the Controller’s Fuse

Cause:
All ShawTech controller boxes are equipped with a fuse that can blow during power surges. These fuses have an indicator light to help diagnose power issues.

Solution:

  1. Locate the fuse and check the indicator light:
    • Green Light: The fuse is good, and the controller box is receiving power.
    • Red Light: The fuse is blown.
  2. If the fuse is blown, refer to this article for detailed guidance: Blown Fuses Troubleshooting.

If the indicator light is off entirely, proceed with the following steps to diagnose the issue further.

2. Faulty Outlet

Cause:
The outlet being used may not be providing power.

Solution:

  • Test the outlet by plugging in another device (e.g., a lamp or phone charger).
  • If the outlet is not functioning, try using a different outlet for your controller.
  • If multiple outlets are non-functional, you may need to check your circuit breaker.

3. Check the Circuit Breaker

Cause:
A tripped circuit breaker could prevent the outlet from receiving power.

Solution:

  1. Locate your home’s circuit breaker panel and check if any switches have tripped.
  2. Reset the breaker for the affected circuit if necessary.
  3. Test the outlet again with your controller box.

4. Inspect the Power Cable

Cause:
The power cable may be damaged, disconnected, or not properly inserted.

Solution:

  1. Check the power cable for visible damage, such as cuts, frayed wires, or bent prongs.
  2. Ensure the cable is securely connected to both the controller box and the power outlet.
    • Note: Sometimes the power cable may feel like it's fully inserted into the box’s power plug but isn’t, so make sure it's pushed into the socket completely.
  3. Test the cable by using it with another device (if compatible) or try a replacement cable to see if the issue persists.

5. Faulty Power Supply

Cause:
If none of the previous steps resolved the issue, there is a good chance the power supply for the controller box may be defective.

Solution:

  1. Plug in the controller box and check for any lights inside the box or on the power supply (if your controller model has indicator lights).
  2. If no lights are visible, the power supply may be faulty.
  3. For a more detailed check:
    • Use a multimeter to measure the voltage output from the power supply.
  4. If no voltage is detected or the reading is significantly lower than 12v, the power supply will need to be replaced. Contact ShawTech Lighting support for the next steps.
