Lights after a branch or jump don't work

Lights after a branch or jump don't work

If you install your lights and find that the lights after a branch aren't working, it is most likely caused by one of these problems:

Poor Connection

When troubleshooting connections, we recommend using Wago connectors or something similar because they are easy to add and remove. Once you verify if the connection is the issue, then you can replace the Wagos with something more permanent.
  1. Check the connections you made to make sure they are correct and have a good connection. If you're unsure, re-do them.
  2. Using a multimeter, verify you are getting power on the red and black wires using a multimeter at both points of the jump.
  3. Using a multimeter, check for continuity on the black data cable you are using for the jump or branch just to make sure there is nothing wrong with it.

Incorrect Connection

If you accidentally connected the wrong wires together, there is a good chance you burned out some LEDs. Sometimes it will just burn one or two, sometimes I will burn a whole strand.
  1. Connect the wires correctly and test.
  2. If that doesn't work, check to see if any parts of the LED look burned or scorched. Remove those LEDs plus a couple additional LEDs and try connecting them again.
Contact us at support@shawtechlighting.com if you need additional LEDs, just be aware you may be charged for a whole strand.

LEDs were installed backwards

If you are connecting to a partial strand where you have cut off the connector, you may have installed the lights backwards. The lights will work once you have them going the correct direction.

The LEDs have an input and output side (see images below):

Your jump is too long

If your jump is over 20 FT long, it may be due to a weak data signal. If your lights are flickering and acting very weird, it's almost certainly a data signal issue and you will need to add a data booster half way through your jump. If your kit was one of the smaller sizes and did not include any data boosters, please contact us and we can send you some. To add a data booster:
  1. Unplug your controller box
  2. Cut the black data cable as near to the half-way point of your jump as possible.
  3. Strip the wires of both the data cable on data booster.
  4. Splice the data booster in the middle of the jump.
    - Black wire goes with the gray-striped wire on the booster
    - Green wire goes with the middle wire on the booster
    - Red wire goes with the unstriped, not center wire on the booster.

If none of these resolved your issue, please contact us at support@shawtechlighting.com.
